			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>The new PARLER FORT speakers&#8217; series at Fort York will host outgoing Mayor David Miller on Monday, Nov. 18, along with many of the 18 Torontonians featured in his new book, <em>Witness to a City</em>.</p>
<p>Mayor Miller&#8217;s seven years in office as Mayor are known for many initiatives, but Mayor Miller chose to write his book about 18 Torontonians who are the embodiment of what he believes is best about Toronto: the desire to help, the vision of a better place, the power to transform oneself.</p>
<p>Four of them will participate in a Q &amp; A panel discussion with David:</p>
<p><strong>Anne Johnson</strong>: former City Councillor<br />
<strong>Liz Briggs:</strong> on staff at Native Child &amp; Family Services,<br />
<strong>William Boyd:</strong> former bank manager who found himself homeless after personal crises, eventually benefited from the services of Homeward and has lived in safe, subsidized housing for the past 5 years<br />
<strong>Stephen Diamond</strong>: lawyer, developer</p>
<p>Doors open at 7pm, the event begins at 7:30.<br />
Everyone is welcome. Admission: $10</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A friend of mine recently sent along a copy of <a title="Allan Kulikoff" href="http://www.uga.edu/history/people/people.php?page=16" target="_blank">Allan Kulikoff</a>&#8216;s presentation to the <a title="Conference Program" href="http://www.bu.edu/historic/conf2010/schedule.html" target="_blank">Historical Society Conference</a> at the beginning of June.  Kulikoff&#8217;s presentation, entitled &#8216;A Modest Proposal to Solve the Crisis in History&#8217;, argues that the pedagogy and curriculum of many history departments have not kept up with the historiographical innovations of the twentieth century.  His solution involves nothing less than a wholesale revision of the profession, particularly the teaching of undergraduate and graduate history programs.  You can listen to <a title="Kulikoff Presentation" href="http://histsociety.blogspot.com/2010/06/dispatches-from-historical-society_07.html" target="_blank">Kulikoff&#8217;s presentation </a>to the Historical Society by visiting their blog.</p>
